Flat Piercing: Labrets and Push-In Studs for the Flat Cartilage

A Flat Piercing is large enough for eye-catching designs like flowers or gemstone fans.

For your Flat Piercing, you will find over 950 models in our shop, almost all of them labrets with a flat back. More than half are made of titanium, alongside studs made of surgical steel, brass, high-quality gold-plated options, and a small selection of Bioflex. The tops range from simple balls, stars, flowers, leaves, and butterflies to zirconia clusters and marquise stone fans. You can choose between silver, gold, and rose gold tones. For all other shapes for the upper ear area, check out our Helix Piercing overview.

Flat Piercing at PiercingXXL: our selection

Discover our selection of over 860 flat piercing models, where a part of the collection is made of titanium and available in metal colors like silver, gold, rose gold, or black. You can choose between a flat back labret with an internal thread, a threadless push-in closure, or designs with a movable dangle. To complete your look, these pieces are decorated with zirconia or crystal stones in colors like crystal or rainbow AB.

What is a Flat Piercing?

The Flat Piercing goes through the flat cartilage area of the upper ear, between the helix rim and the rook. Because the surface is flat, this spot is great for larger tops and combinations of multiple studs. Behind the ear, the back of the stud rests directly against the side of the head, which is why a flat back is important: it doesn't press into the skin and won't get caught when you sleep or brush your hair.

Closures: Internally Threaded or Push-In

Most labrets for Flat Piercings are internally threaded. The top is screwed into the barbell, so no threads are pulled through the piercing channel. With push-in (threadless) models, you insert the top into the post using a slightly bent pin, and the tension holds it securely in place. This allows you to change tops quickly without removing the post. You can find a large selection of this closure type under Push-In Piercing. There are also some Bioflex posts with push-in closures available, which are soft and flexible.

Materials, Gauges, and Lengths

ASTM F136 titanium is nickel-free and the first choice for a fresh Flat Piercing or sensitive skin. You can find more models made of this material in the Titanium Piercing category. Surgical steel is durable and affordable, while brass is fashion jewelry for a healed piercing. Gold-colored models made of titanium or steel are PVD coated.

The most common gauge is 1.2 mm (16G), but we also carry 1.0 mm (18G), 1.6 mm (14G), and 0.8 mm (20G). The posts are mostly available in 6 mm, 8 mm, and 10 mm lengths, with some in 12 mm. As a guide: a fresh Flat Piercing often needs 8 mm to 10 mm due to swelling; after healing, 6 mm or 8 mm usually fits best so the stud sits flush.

Our Practical Advice

For your Flat Piercing, go for a 1.2 mm (16G) titanium labret with a push-in closure. That way, the post stays in your ear, and you only swap out the tops. The surface is large enough for eye-catching designs like flowers or stone fans once the post is downsized after healing and sits flush against the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions about Flat Piercings

What jewelry is best for a Flat Piercing?

Labrets with a flat back are the best choice because they don't press behind the ear. Rings are very uncommon for the flat, as the placement is far from the ear's edge. For the healing period, piercers usually recommend a titanium labret.

How long does a Flat Piercing take to heal?

As with all cartilage piercings, healing a Flat Piercing usually takes several months. During this time, you should not change the post and avoid putting pressure on the area, such as from hats or headphones.

When should I downsize the post?

Once the initial swelling has gone down, your piercer can switch to a shorter post. A post that is too long will wobble, is more likely to get caught, and can pull the piercing channel at an angle.

Can I combine multiple Flat Piercings?

Yes, the flat surface offers plenty of room for two or three studs next to each other. Many people combine a larger top with small stones or balls. The flat also pairs beautifully with helix studs on the rim; you can find a selection of these under Helix Piercing Studs.

Do push-in tops fit my post?

Push-in tops only fit push-in posts, and threaded tops only fit internally threaded posts. Therefore, always pay attention to the closure type of your post when buying replacements.

How your ear piercing heals

Weeks 1–2Care

Clean twice a day with sterile saline solution and only touch with clean hands.

Up to week 6Leave it in

Do not change the initial jewelry and do not sleep on the pierced side.

Weeks 6–12Healing

An earlobe is usually healed after six to twelve weeks. Cartilage like a helix or tragus takes six to twelve months.

AfterwardsChanging

Once everything is calm, you can insert new jewelry – in the same gauge as before.

These times are guidelines; every healing process is different. In case of severe pain, swelling, or pus, please consult your piercing studio or a doctor.
