Helix types

A helix should only be pierced in a professional piercing studio by competent piercers. Under no circumstances should this cartilage piercing be shot with an ear gun, as this risks shattering the cartilage tissue.

Therefore, you should be prepared for a painful piercing. However, the greatest pain should be over in a few seconds, as the piercing usually does not take long.

Care and healing

The healing time of a pierced helix piercing is relatively long, about 6 - 9 months. This is due to the thick cartilage tissue at the helix site. A pierced helix takes much less time to heal, about 2 - 3 months.

The new helix piercing should only be touched during care. The hands must always be disinfected so that no germs get into the piercing canal. Care should take place twice a day for the first few weeks. The care products recommended by the piercer should be used.

People who wear glasses must be especially careful when having a helix Piercings. Glasses must always be put on and taken off carefully so as not to bump against the helix piercing.

It is also important to be careful when putting on and taking off clothing. Dressing too quickly or too roughly can cause the clothing to become tangled with the Helix ear jewellery.

The hair should not be coloured for at least 6 - 8 weeks after stitching, as the dyes contain aggressive chemicals. These can attack the piercing wound when the hair is rinsed out. In general, you should also wear your hair in such a way that it does not get caught in the piercing jewellery.

Visiting swimming pools and saunas as well as doing sports activities should be avoided during the first weeks. Bathing is also not recommended during this time. Instead, showering is more suitable in the period after the piercing. When showering, only mild and PH-neutral shampoos should be used so as not to irritate the piercing wound.

After piercing, you should also avoid sleeping on the pierced ear. If only one ear is pierced, you can simply sleep on the other ear. If both ears are pierced at the same time, a neck pillow can help. You can lie down with your ear in the hollow of the neck pillow to protect the piercing wound.

When using the telephone, you should always disinfect the telephone or mobile phone beforehand. This will prevent pathogens from entering the piercing canal.

The jewellery should only be changed after the wound has healed completely.

Risks

A helix piercing also carries certain risks. With cartilage piercings, wild flesh forms faster and more frequently than with other types of piercings. Such hardenings around the helix look unattractive and can quickly make the joy of the new Jewelry disappear. To avoid this, the piercer's care recommendations should always be followed to the letter.

The poor blood supply to the cartilage tissue results in a longer healing phase during which inflammation can occur. Signs such as yellow or green pus, throbbing pain as well as strong reddening can announce such an inflammation. As soon as an infection is suspected, the piercer or the doctor should be consulted as soon as possible. In addition, the jewellery must not be removed in the case of an inflammation, as otherwise the infection can encapsulate.

Another risk of helix piercing is the pressure pain that can occur after piercing. This pain is caused by the ear cartilage being displaced to make room for the jewellery. To avoid this pressure pain, the helix can also be punched. When punching, this pain does not occur because the ear cartilage is not displaced but punched out.

Initial swelling or bruising can also occur with the helix. A good piercer will usually pierce so skilfully that this rarely happens. If your own helix is swollen or a bruise forms around the piercing, careful cooling of the area can help.
