Lip piercing types

The term Lip piercing describes all piercings in the lip area and includes many different types of lip piercings.

The Monroe Piercing and Madonna piercings are both lateral lip piercings that are placed above the upper lip. The Monroe piercing is on the left side of the upper lip, while the Madonna piercing is on the right side.

The Medusa Piercing is located centrally between the upper lip and the nose at the so-called philtrum. The lesser known Jestrum also runs through this area. However, the Jestrum is pierced vertically and worn with a curved barbell. The medusa, on the other hand, is pierced horizontally and embellished with labrets.

The so-called Labret Piercing is pierced horizontally under the lip and placed in the centre or on the side. Several labret piercings form new lip piercing types: Dolphin Bites refer to two lower lip piercings that are placed next to each other in the centre. Spider Bites are two side by side lower lip piercings. Spider Bites can be on either the right or left side. Spider Bites on both sides of the lower lip are known as Shark Bites Piercing.

The Dahlia Piercing consists of two lip piercings located at the two corners of the mouth. The symmetry of this piercing creates a unique look. The Snake Bites Piercing piercing also includes two lip piercings that are placed on both sides under the lip. Symmetry also plays an important role in the Snake Bites.

The Ashley Piercing and Eskimo Piercing are two types belong to one of the few lip piercings that are pierced through the red of the lip. The Ashley is pierced from front to back through the lower lip and worn with a labret. The ball of the labret lies in the centre of the lower lip.

With the Eskimo piercing, the lower lip is pierced vertically. The Jewelry for the Eskimo is a curved barbell. The lower ball of the banana sits under the lower lip, while the upper ball sits on the lower lip. Another type of lip piercing that goes directly through the lip is the lane piercing. Here the lower lip is pierced horizontally and a curved barbell is inserted. The two balls lie next to each other on the lower lip.

The labial frenulum is a thin fold of tissue located in the mouth that connects the gums to the lip. The lip Frenulum Piercing includes two varieties of piercings: the smiley and the frowney. The smiley piercing is pierced through the upper lip frenulum, which connects the upper lip and the gums. The frowney piercing, on the other hand, is pierced through the lower frenulum. Both types are worn with a thin horseshoe and owe their name to the resulting look of a smiley or frowney.

With the different types of lip piercings, the face can be individually embellished. You can wear a simple look with just one stylishly placed lip piercing or you can combine the various lip piercing types and let your creativity run free. Many of these lip piercing combinations are very popular and now have their own name.

For example, the Angel Bites piercing is a combination of the Monroe and Madonna piercing. The combination of Medusa and a central labret piercing is called Cyber Bites Piercing. The Canine Bites piercing combines the Angel Bites and Snake Bites. In total, it consists of four piercings, each on the right and left above the upper lip and below the lower lip.

Piercing jewellery for the lip

The Labret Piercing plug is the most used piercing jewellery for the lip area. Usually the labrets are about 6 - 8 mm long and have a bar thickness of 1.2 - 1.6 mm. For lip piercings it is especially recommended to use labret bars made of Bioflex, as the soft material causes less friction and pressure on the gums and is therefore gentler on the teeth. The visible attachments of the labrets can be chosen from many different materials and designs. The high-quality materials Titanium Labret Piercing and Gold Labret Piercing are particularly popular. The inexpensive material surgical steel is also in demand due to its many advantages. The labrets also have different types of threads, whereby the internal thread and the push-in are the most commonly used due to their advantages.

For many of the lip piercing types such as the Snake Bite, rings or horseshoes are also popularly used as facial jewellery. The diameter of these piercing rings is about 6 - 8 mm. A unique look is offered by spiral-shaped open rings with attachments at both ends that nestle against the lip.

A few lip piercings like the Eskimo or the Lane Piercing use curved barbells as piercing jewellery. The bar thickness is often 1.2 mm, while the length depends on the size of the lip and the piercing channel.

Fake piercings are a popular way to imitate piercing looks. Even though there is no fake version for the plugs and labrets, you can still embellish your lips with fake piercing rings. At the same time, you can try out the look without having to decide on a lip piercing.

Piercing a lip piercing

The piercing of a lip piercing should be done by an experienced piercer, just like any other type of piercing. He or she will clean the desired area and mark the entry and exit points. Once you are happy with the placement, the piercer will grip the marked areas with a pair of forceps and pierce them with a special piercing needle. This process usually only takes a few seconds.

As most oral piercings swell after piercing, a slightly longer labret plug of about 8 mm to 10 mm is always inserted as the initial jewellery. After the swelling has gone down, the labret can be changed to the next smaller length.

The pain caused by a lip piercing is subjective and is felt differently by each person. In general, lip piercings are perceived as slightly more painful than other piercings due to the many nerves in the mouth area.

The cost of piercing a lip varies from studio to studio. The type of lip piercing is also important here. The price for a lip piercing can therefore vary greatly and is usually between €40 and €80. Lip piercing combinations cost correspondingly more.

Care and healing

The healing time for most lip piercings is usually about 6 to 8 weeks. Exceptions are the Medusa and Madonna piercings, which take about 2 to 3 months to heal completely. However, this period can be longer if there are complications.

The lip or mouth will swell for a few days immediately after the piercing. This is normal with oral piercings, so there is no need to worry about this initial swelling. The swelling should then go down after about one to two weeks. Cooling the wound regularly can help the swelling to go down more quickly.

The care of lip piercings includes some special rules in addition to the usual care steps that apply to all piercings. Especially when eating, a freshly pierced lip piercing needs to be taken care of. Milk and dairy products as well as foods with acid (e.g. citrus fruits) should be avoided during the healing phase. Especially with oral piercings, alcohol and smoking should be avoided. Kissing and French should also be avoided during the first two weeks.

The new lip piercing is best disinfected and cleaned twice a day, both inside and outside. The use of a mild piercing mouth rinse supports the healing process. Crusts that have formed on the wound can be gently removed with a damp cloth.

Lip piercings whose piercing channels run directly through the lip (e.g. Ashley) should not come into contact with cosmetics during the healing process. Strikingly made-up lips in combination with the new lip piercing may be tempting, but the lipstick would only irritate the fresh wound unnecessarily. Pain and inflammation would be the result. Other cosmetics such as creams or powders should also not be used near the stitch canal for this reason.

Care should be taken when dressing and undressing so that the new piercing does not get caught on clothing.

Risks

A lip piercing is a beautiful and individual facial jewellery that can give the wearer a lot of pleasure. However, lip piercings also carry certain risks and dangers that you should be aware of.

During the healing phase, inflammations and the formation of wild flesh are possible. This danger can be reduced by regular and conscientious care. Choosing a professional piercer also favours healing without infection, as they are clean and precise when piercing.

If the initial jewellery is too short for the swelling of the lip, it can also happen that the attachment sinks in or grows in. In this case, the piercer should be consulted immediately so that a longer jewellery can be inserted.

Possible tooth damage is a risk when piercing the lips. The part of the piercing jewellery that sits on the inside can damage the gums and teeth over time due to the constant friction when speaking. However, this risk can be reduced by choosing the right material. For labret studs, bars made of Bioflex are advisable. Tight-fitting labret rings also cause less friction than loose-fitting rings, which come into more contact with the gums or teeth. However, there is a risk of accidentally biting on lip rings.

If you don't like your lip piercing after it has been pierced or if your lip rejects the foreign body, a small scar may remain after the jewellery has been removed and the hole has grown back. In most cases, these scars are small and easy to cover.
