Shapes of a Nostril Piercing Stud
A Nostril Piercing Stud needs to stay securely in the nostril without a screw backing getting in the way inside. That is why the end is specially shaped. The most common is the L-shape, where the post bends at a right angle: it is easy to insert and sits reliably in everyday life. The nose screw has a twisted end and holds particularly securely, but requires a little practice to insert. Straight studs (nose bones) with a small bulb at the end are the most comfortable to change; you can find a large selection at Nose Piercing Stud.
The fishtail comes with a long, straight post and is bent by the piercer to fit your nose perfectly – ensuring an individual and comfortable fit; more models can be found at Nose Piercing Fishtail. In addition, there are some studs available as push-in: the top is pressed into the post with slight tension and can be changed without a thread. You can find more about this system at Push-In Piercing.
Material and Dimensions for Nostril Piercing Studs
ASTM F136 titanium is nickel-free and lightweight, making it the top choice for sensitive skin and fresh piercings. 316L surgical steel is robust and proven for healed nose piercings. The gold-colored studs made of steel and titanium are coated, and some models are made of brass; it is best to wear these only in a fully healed nostril. Genuine 925 silver is available for a few models, as well as one stud made of Bioflex.
Most Nostril Piercing Studs have a thickness of 0.8 mm (20G) or 1.0 mm (18G), and for very finely pierced nostrils, 0.6 mm (22G) is also available. The standard length is 6 mm and fits most noses. The 19 mm for the fishtail is the raw length before bending.
Our Practical Advice
Keep two shapes ready for your Nostril Piercing Stud: a titanium screw or L-shape for everyday wear and sports, and a more playful stud with a stone or motif for special occasions. Once you know your gauge and length, you can freely mix and match from over 200 models.
Frequently Asked Questions About Nostril Piercing Studs
What length does a Nostril Piercing Stud need?
Usually, a length of 6 mm fits perfectly because the nostril tissue is similarly thick for most people. If you have thicker tissue or want a custom fit, you can get a fishtail adjusted by your piercer.
0.8 mm or 1.0 mm – which thickness is right?
That depends on the needle used for piercing. Measure your current stud or ask your piercing studio, as a thicker post cannot be inserted easily without stretching.
Which Nostril Piercing Stud is least likely to fall out?
The nose screw holds most securely due to its twist, followed by the L-shape. Straight studs (nose bones) are comfortable but sit more loosely and are better suited for resting phases.
Can I change a Nostril Piercing Stud myself?
With a healed piercing, this is usually no problem with an L-shape or straight stud. The screw is inserted with a slight twisting motion, and the fishtail is best bent by your piercer the first time.
Stud, screw, L-shape, or ring?
The straight stud is the easiest to insert, the screw holds particularly securely in the nostril, and the L-shape combines the best of both. A ring, on the other hand, makes a bold statement. Our recommendation: If you change your jewelry yourself, the L-shape is a great place to start.
How your nose piercing heals
Clean twice a day with sterile saline solution, do not twist it, and only touch with clean hands.
Keep the initial jewelry in and keep makeup or creams away from the piercing channel.
A nose piercing is usually healed after two to four months; sometimes it takes up to six months.
Now you can switch to a stud, ring, or L-shape – in the same gauge as before.
These times are guidelines; every healing process is different. In case of severe pain, swelling, or pus, please consult your piercing studio or a doctor.
